Frequently Asked Questions
What is the normal creatinine level?
About 0.7–1.3 mg/dL for men and 0.6–1.1 mg/dL for women, though muscular people run higher and ranges vary by lab. More important than one value is your trend over time and the eGFR calculated from it.
What does eGFR mean?
eGFR (estimated glomerular filtration rate) estimates how much blood your kidneys filter each minute. Above 60 is normal; below 60 for more than 3 months indicates chronic kidney disease, staged from the eGFR level. It is calculated from creatinine, age and sex.
Can creatinine be high without kidney disease?
Yes — dehydration, a very high-protein meal, creatine supplements, heavy exercise and some medicines can raise it temporarily. That is why an unexpected result is usually repeated when you are well and hydrated.
When is a kidney result urgent?
Potassium above range, rapidly rising creatinine, very low urine output, breathlessness or swelling need same-day medical care. Kidney disease is usually silent early — abnormal numbers are often the first sign.
